Subject:
Inspection No. 99990001/86-11 On August 27, 1986, a Region I inspector, Mr. R. H. Ladun, visited your. site.
He explained that a concerned citizen had stated that your facility was using radioactive material in Wolfram ore and requested your cooperation in investi-gating this~ statement. Measurements made by our inspector using portable
' instrumentation indicated that the ore in use at your facility was not radio-active.
In addition, Mr. Ladun made radiation level measurements in various areas of your plant. All readings were within the expected' ranges for the location and material. An ore sample provided by you was. subsequently analyzed in our Regional Office Laboratory in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and his initial finding was confirmed. The results of our onsite and laboratory measurements indicate that the ore does not contain radioactive material and that Kennametal, Inc. does not need a NRC licensee to possess and process this particular ore at Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
