h UNITED STATES 8 o NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION g E WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

% *****$ April 11, 1986 Mr. James E. Tierney Attorney General State of Maine IN RESPONSE REFER State House Station 6 TO F01A-86-221 Augusta, ME 04333

Dear Mr. Tierney:

This is in response to your letter dated March 21, 1986, in which you 6 requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, six categories of-records related to the storage of nuclear waste in the State of Maine.

During an April 10, 1986, telephone conversation between Mr. Stephen Isaacs of my staff and Mr. Thomas Warren of your staff, the request was clarified to NRC records under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act with regard to siting of repositories within the State of Maine. This office was informed that NRC is involved in licensing rather than siting activities. Therefore, the NRC has no records subject to your request.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please telephone Mr. Isaacs on 301-492-7604.
