Dear Sir:

This report is being furnished in accordance with the conditions stated in NRC license No. SNM 362.

Leaktests performed on 8/15/97 on two St-90 sealed sources, indicated the presence of greater than 0.005 l

uCi of radioactive material. The samples contained approximately 0.030 uCi and 0.007 uCi of Sr-90.

The sources tested were manufactured by Bebig GmbH, serial numbers 0071/97 and 0050/87 and received at NIST on 8/6/97 and 6/5/96 respectively. Each source consists of a set of 12 brachytherapy type seeds with a total Sr-90 activity of 30 mCl. Each seed is cylindrically shaped with dimensions of =

0.6mm by 2.5mm, The leaktest procedure consisted of flushlag water through the source storage tube and collecting 2:

water for liquid scintillation analysis. All contamination was limited to the interior of the source storage containers and the leaktest samples.

As corrective action, the sources have been withdrawn from service and it is planned to return the sources to the manufacturer in the near future. The return shipment will comply with all applicable DOT regulations. The specific cause of the :~:rce contamination is unknown at this time.

A previous report dated 8/12/97 notified your <>ffice of leaktest results great;.. than 0.005 uCi for source number 0047/97. Because of this pattern of contamination, increased leaktest surveillance of this model source has been implemented.

If you have any questions call Doug Eagleson,301-975-5800, of the NIST Health Physics Group.

Sincerely, Ms.P L.E. Pevey, Ch *f 1
