Letter ofIntent In Accordance With Title 10 Code of Federal  !

Regulations Parts 50.82(b)(3)(I) and 50.75(e)(1)(iv).

Dear Mr. Adams:

This letter is a statement ofintent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that at such time that the physical decommissioning of the University ofIllinois Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (Docket No. 50-51) is required, the necessary funds will be appropriated. The 1998 estimate for this decommissioning is $4.4M. The necessary funding to maintain the facility in SAFSTOR status will be provided until such time that the fuel can be shipped offsite and decommissioning commenced (approximately 2010). The cost to maintain the facility in a SAFSTOR status is approximately $43,000 per jear for salaries and expenditures in 1998 dollars. ,
