The Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC), as part of its responsibility of regulating nuclear power plants, periodically evaluates the performance of its licensees through a program called the Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP). Through this program, we review and evaluate our 4

licensees' performance in the four major categories of:

Plant Operations, Maintenance. Engineering, and Plant Support.

The Plant Support category includes an assessment of licensee performance with regard to emergency preparedness.

On September 24, 1997, representatives of the NRC will meet with the management of the Southern Nuclear Operating Company to discuss the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant's performance over the past 18 months.

You are ir.vited to attend this meeting as an observer.

Subsequent to this meeting, we have scheduled time to meet with you, and other members of your staff-as you deem appropriate, to discuss matters of mutual interest with regard to the regulation and performance of Vogtle.

This SALP meeting is scheduled to be conducted at 10:30 a.m. at the Administrative Building at the Vogtle site.
