L Dear Mr. Patuiski:

On June

27,1997, the NRC completed an irispection o' the emergency preparedness

program at your Point Beach Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2. The enclosed report presents

the results of that inspection.

Areas examined within your emergency preparedness program are identified in the report,

Within those areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and

representative records, interviews with personnel, and observation of activities in progress.

The objective of the inspection effort was to determine whether activities authorized by

the license were conducted safely and in accordance with NRC requirements.

Your emergency preparedness program was in a commendable state of operational

readiness and emergency response facilities were well-maintained, as evidencs 2 by their

material condition. Plant personnel performed effectively during an actual activation of the

Emergency Plan. Self-assessments by your emergency planning staff were proactive and

effective and quality assurance oversight of the program was very competent. Your

nnshift dose assessment capability was evaluated and found acceptable.

Based on the results of this inspection, no violations of NRC requirements were identified.
