TERMINATION OF US NRC LICENSE NOS. 37-00136-12, 37-00136-13, SNM-566, AND SUA-1024 Gentlemen:
In accordance with my. telephone conversations of July 9, 1986 with Mr. Lester Tripp, this letter describes the prior utilization of open sources of NRC licensed material at field locations by the Gulf Research & Development Company.
Philadelphia, PA - Radioactive tracers were used at the Philadelphia Refinery to test for leaks in heat exchangers in 1961 and to measure flow rates to calibrate flow meters in 1966. The radioisotope used was 36-hr bromine-82.
Hanna, WY - Radiotracers were used to measure flows of materials at an underground coal gasification test site at Hanna, WY in 1977.
The radioiso-topes used were 36-hr bromine-82 and 1.8-hr argon-41.
Ft. Lewis, WA - Radiotracers were used to measure mixing character-istics and residence time distributions at a coal liquefaction plant at Ft. Lewis, WA* during the period from 1979 to 1981.
The radioisotopes used were 36-hr bromine-82, 2.7-day gold-198 and 1.8-hr argon-41.
No open sources of radioactive materials were used at any other field sites authorized in NRC licenses. All additional applications of radioactive materials at field locations involved exclusively the use of sealed sources.
Because only short-lived radioisotopes were used in open sources at field locations, no surveys or contamination tests were carried out at field sites in connection with our application for terniination of US NRC licenses.
