G. William Mutch Associate Professor of Chemistry Berrien Springs, MI 49104 Gentlemen:
We have reviewed your letter dated November 12, 1985 requesting reactivation of your NRC License for possession of 80 grams of plutomium-239 for use in a neutron howitzer and find that we will need additional information as follows:
1.
Please specify which previously submitted documents you wish to reference (e.g., letter dated..., application dated...) as part of your new license.
2.
Describe the precautions taken during experiments involving fast neutron irradiation and/or leak testing when the Pu-Be source is removed from the
-howitzer.
Include a description of special handling tools and equipment that may be used, and the type of personnel monitoring devices that will be assigned to individuals _ working with the unshielded Pu-Be source.
3.
Submit the procedures to be followed in the event of fire or some other emergency that may involve damage or loss of the Pu-Be source.
Include the names and telephone numbers of individuals within the college who should be notified and who will, in turn, notify the NRC and, if applicable, the local police and State personnel.
Please also inform us of your means for insuring that appropriate personnel are aware of the procedures to be followed.
4.
Confirm that targets activated by neutron exposure will be handled with tweezers, forceps, or other remote handling device, and will be stored for day in a secured enclosure (e.g., locked cabinet, drawer, etc.)
