Fisheries Service (NMFS) Letter of Authorization to take a small number of seals incidental to intake cooling water system operations at Seabrook Station. The results of the seat necropsy performed by the New England Aquarium are also enclosed.
The seal was first observed in Seabrook Station's Intake Transition Structure on June 30,1999 and recovered from screen wash debris on July 2,1999. North Atlantic noti 6ed' the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) of this entrapment pursuant to Paragraph 6(f) of the NMFS Letter of 2

Good condition young of the year harbor seal... age est 2 months Significant Gross Pathology or Trauma:
No heart or lung parasites... hemorrhage of eyes into anterior chamber, consistent with forced submersion. Hemorrhage surrounding larynx, extending to thoracic inlet.
Stomach Contents:
@ 10-15 grams of contents...recently ingested small fish (pos.
silversides or sand cel) no or other identifiable bones. Very light nematode load pos. indicating sealjust weaning.

None.
Comments: Signs consistent with live impingement, possibly while foraging (recently ingested prey). Age (size) and condition of seal consistent with recently weaned, young of the year pup. No other significant disease or pathology.
Additional Measurements: Measurements of head were also taken. All measurements taken at widest point of head (at car level). Width... ! Icm... Depth (dorsal to ventral)..12cm... Girth (at ears). 35cm...
