CHAIRMAN September 19, 1986 The Honorable Madeleine M. Kunin Governor of Vermont Montpelier, Vgrmont 05602

Dear Governor Kunin:

I have received your letter of July 31, 1986. I appreciate your good wishes on my appointment as Chairman.

I understand your concerns over the Chernobyl accident and the -

special interest that it has generated in Vermont over operation of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant.

NRC staff members have just returned from meetings in Vienna and the USSR. We are carefully analyzing the accident data, but our current view is that they are not cause for fmmediate regulatory concern.

In regard to your interest in co-inspection by the State of Vermont in inspections of nuclear plants, Mr. Murley, Regional Administrator of NRC Region I, is discussing this matter with Mr. Tarrant of the State of Vermont. We should be able to come to a practical solution on this issue.

On those matters, and others, it may be useful for us to meet as you suggested. I am personally unable to meet with you in the noar future due to a heavy travel schedule the next few months, but perhaps we could schedule a tims during a future trip you may have to Washington.

Sincerely, M

Lando W. Z ch, Jr.
