[ INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical

[ Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and .

electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant

! biological alterations resulting from the THINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in August 1986 (Table 1). The fol-loving changes in the TMINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule were made during August: creel surveys originally scheduled for 30 August were conducted

( on 9 August, ichthyoplankton sampling scheduled for 5 August was con-ducted 6 August, and seining originally scheduled for 6 August was con-ducted on 5 August due to field personnel scheduling problems. Details

{ are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-

[ quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

Vater Quality Analysis

{

Objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters

[ of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-( vey samples.

[

( 1

I Progress: Vater quality samples vt.re collected on 13 August 1986 and forwarded to TMI-EC (Table 1). Duplicate water samples were taken at all stations and forwarded to the EA Engineering, I Science and Technology, Inc., Chemistry Laboratory for total dissolved solids analysis. Select water quality parameters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey. The TMI-EC audit of vater quality field procedures was conducted on 13 August.

Benthic Macroinvertebrates I Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity I of TMINS.

Progress: Benthos sampling on 13 August 1986 consisted of rep-licate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthos stations (Table 1). The THI-EC benthos field audit was conducted on 13 August 1986.

I Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species composition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Replicate (2) ichthyoplankton samples were taken at I

Progress:

each of the eight sampling stations on 6, 12, 19, and 26 August 1986 (Table 1).

Seine Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-ity of TMINS. .

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp-ling stations on 5 and 27 August 1986 (Table 1). The TMI-EC audit of seine field procedures was conducted on 5 August 1986.

Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance,

[ occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

{

Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 7 and 28 August 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 77 fish of 10 species and 117 fish of 12 species collected on 7 and 28

( August respectively (Tables 2 and 3). More fish were collected at Station 11B1 than at any other station on both dates (33 specimens on 7 August and 34 specimens on 28 August). Station

{ 11B1 also produced the largest number of species, with 10 and 8 species collected on 7 and 28 August respectively. Quillback and pumpkinseed dominated the catch on both sample dates. Ecto-parasites observed on fishes collected on 7 August included:

( anchor vorms (Lernaea) on four pumpkinseed; and leeches on one smallmouth bass and one largemouth bass. Cysts were seen on two pumpkinseed and one smallmouth bass. Three smallmouth bass and

{ one largemouth bass exhibited vounds related to angling (e.g.,

hooks in mouth, mouth fungus, eye injuries, etc.). Included

[ 3 ii

among the fishes collected on 28 August vere: one green sunfish I and three pumpkinseed with fungus on their ventral fins; and one quillback, one shorthead redhorse, one bluegill, and one small-mouth bass with miscellaneous cysts. Anchor vorms were seen on four pumpkinseed, two bluegill, and one smallmouth bass; and leeches were observed on one quillback and one smallmouth bass.

I Creel Survey Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near THINS.

I Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 1, 3, 9, and 14 Aug-ust 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 274 anglers who re-I portedly fished 553.22 hours2.546296e-4 days
0.00611 hours
3.637566e-5 weeks
8.371e-6 months
, caught 500 fish, and harvested 142 fish (28% of the total catch)(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort (h/e) were 0.90 and 0.26 fish per hour, respectively. Smallmouth bass and chan-nel catfish were the predominant fishes caught (208 and 157 spe-cimens, respectively), and harvested (35 and 85 specimens, re-spectively) by anglers. Most anglers (126), most fish caught I (256), and most hours fished (283.82) were recorded at the Gen-eral Reservoir. Most fish (56) were harvested from the York Haven Generating Station, while the highest c/e (1.34) was re-corded at the East Dam. Anglers were predominantly residents of York or Dauphin Counties and the majority indicated that they eat at least a portion of their catch.
