Dear Mr. Themelis:
Staff of the Geotechnical Branch, Division of Waste Management have developed a rainfall-duration curve (see enclosure) principally for use in the hydrologic l
design of rock arr'or for tailings embankments. The curve is a fit of rainfall i
-intensities from Hydrometeorological Report 49 for durations greater than 15 i
minutes, and from information obtained directly from the National Weather Service for. durations shorter than 15 minutes.
The staff considers this curve to be suitable for deterraining peak runoff rates to be used in the design of rock armor for mill tailings slopes and diversion ditches. where~the times of concentration may be very short. Please convey j
this information to the appropriate TAC staff.
