20555 Gentlemen:
On March 19, 1987, Messrs. W. Magee, Acting Director of the Division of Information Support Services, Office of Information Resources Manage-ment, and A. DeAgazio, Davis-Besse Project Manager, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, met with Toledo Edison representatives to discuss the potential mutual uses of optical disk technology. Specifically, this discussion concerned the selection of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. I by the NRC Staff for a NRC/ utility pilot program on the uses of optical disk technology.
At this meeting, Toledo Edison discussed its tentative plans for using optical disk technology and provided Mr. Magee with a floppy disk containing a portion of the Updated Safety Analysis Report for the NRC's use as a sample case in transferring information to an optical disk. The open discussion between the meeting participants was extremely worthwhile in identifying potential licensing review areas for applying this new technology.
As discussed with the NRC Staff at this same meeting, there are several additional licensing review areas of information generation, transfer and storage using electronic means which should be further explored. Toledo Edison believes the implementation of the pilot program could lead to an eventual reduction in the burden of submitting information while making the information more accessible to the NRC technical staff. Toledo Edison looks forward to actively participating in this program.
