The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by Region V staff on this date.

LOSS OF SUCTION TO RISIDUAL HEAT REMOVAL SYSTEM WHILE IN HALF-LOOP The onsite phase of the AIT team's special inspection into the subject event )

of 4/10/87 was concluded on Tuesday April 21, 1987 with a meeting with lic::nsee management at the site. -

Significant issues pursued during the AIT's special inspection were sumarized and discussed in a telephone briefing of senior NRC HQS management by the AIT team leader on the morning of April 21, 1987 (weekly events briefing). -

On the morning of April 22, 1987 the AIT team leader met with the Deputy San Luis Obispo County Administrator and members of his Emergency Planning Staff, at the request of the Deputy Administrator, to discuss the purpose and reason (s) for the NRC's AIT special inspection at the Diablo Canyon plant.

The concept and NRC's policy regarding the initiation and conduct of AIT special inspections were discussed during the approximately 1 1/2 hour meeting. County Officials expressed appreciation for the briefing as well as the apparent thoroughness of NRC's special inspection into the event of April 10, 1987.

This update is intended to close out this event for purposes of this Preliminary Notification. This information was provided by the AIT team leader.
