TECHNICAL REVIEW REPORT, " POSTULATED LOSS OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER SYSTEM RESULTING FROM TURBINE DRIVEN AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP STEAM SUPPLY LINE RUPTURE" l

The subject report concludes that the Fort Calhoun auxiliary feedwater pump arrangement meets the NRC's current requirements. It raises the question as to whether these requirements are adequate and suggests that the present review plan be reviewed to detennine if additional guidance should be provided. '

The specific area of concern is a rupture of the steam supply line to the .

turbine driven pump. In such an event, auxiliary feedwater capability would l likely be lost since the electric motor driven auxiliary feedwater pump is i adjacent to the turbine driven pump and the electric pump motor is not qualified for a harsh environment. As noted in the report, the Fort Calhoun arrangement -

might be found acceptable on some other defined basis, however, its acceptability based on the current guidance in the Standard Review Plan leads us to question the adequacy of this guidance.

A limited survey of other Combustion Engineering plants and one Babcock & Wilcox plant indicates that the same condition exists at other plants. For example, at Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2, although the electrically driven pump and the steam  !

driven pump are located in different compartments, doors to the two compartments are generally open during operation. At Arkansas Nuclear One Unit 1 there is a partial wall between the pumps to protect against flooding, but the upper portion '

of their space is common. At San Onofre Units 2 & 3, the three auxiliary feed-water pumps occupy the same compartment.

AE00 believes that this matter should be reviewed and the acceptability of having the steam and electrically driven auxiliary feedwater pumps in the same room or space adequately justified or the situation corrected.
