SUBJECT:
TMI-I STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD AUGUST 22 - 29, 1986 Enclosed is the TMI-1 weekly status report from the NRC Resident Office at TMI-1 for the subject pe-iod. The NRC staff continued to monitor routine plant operations at full power.
TMI-1 status reports are intended to provide NRC management and the public with highlights from an NRC regulatory perspective of TMI-1 activities for the previous week.
Subsequent inspection reports will address many of these topics in more detail.

ENCLOSURE TMI-1 STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD AUGUST 22 - 29, 1986 1.
Plant Status As of 8:00 a.m. on August 29, 1986, TMI-I was operating at 100 percent power and at normal reactor coolant temperature (579 F) and pressure (2155 psig).

Facility Operations Summary The plant continued to operate at 100 percent during the reporting period.
3.
Items of Special Interest There were no items of special interest during this reporting period.
4.
Performance Appraisal Inspection The second of the Commission directed two week Performance Appraisal Team (PAT) inspections (termed " PAT II") began on August 25, 1986. The purpose of the eight-member team is to evaluate licensee programs in the following functional areas:
plant operations, including a focus on safety review processes; maintenance; surveillance; design changes and modifications (technical support); and, quality assurance, including a focus on corrective action systems. At the conclusion of the inspection, on September 5, 1986, an exit interview will be conducted at the site.

Planned Public Meeting At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 1986, members of NRC Region I management will be available at the NRC's Middletown office (Downtown Mall, 100 Brown Street, Middletown, Pennsylvania) to answer cuestions from the public regarding both licensee performance, as evaluated in a recent Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance (SALP), and NRC inspection programs at TMI-1.
The meeting will be s,imilar in purpose to the one held in Middletown on April 24, 1986, to discuss an earlier SALP. Because of space limitations at the Middletown Office, it is im-portant for those planning to attend the public meeting to contact Allen R. Blough at (215) 337-5146 or (717) 948-1160.
If the number of respondents is large, an alternate location in the Middletown-Harrisburg area will be arranged.

NRC Staff Activities During the Period On August 27, 1986, Messrs. R. Conte and A. Blough met with two members of the public, Ms. D. Davenport and Mr. E. Epstein to answer questions regarding site activities, as well as the B&W plant reassessment program, in response to Ms. Davenport's letters of June and July 1986.

2 Enclosure During this report period, the NRC staff consisted of the senior resident inspector and three resident inspectors and was supplemented by the PAT team inspectors.
