Dear Mr. DeGrassi:

ENERGY ABSORBER INFORMATION l POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT Per your verbal request on March 6, 1987, we are transmitting l the following information related to the use of energy absorbers on the main steam dump system at Point Beach Nuclear Plant.

1) Bechtel Specification 10447-042(Q), Revision 0, Technical Specification for Energy Absorbers, which includes Fabrication / Assembly Drawings 7409, Revision A and 7410, Revision A.
2) Bechtel Calculation E10447-1, Revision 0, Fatigue Evaluation I of Energy Absorbers, Point Beach Nuclear Plant.
3) Procedure NDE-750,' Revision 5, Visual Examination of Nuclear Power Plant Components.

l We proposed to include the energy absorbers in our ISI program on the following basis:

1) Energy absorbers will be given a VT-3 examination on an annual basis for a period of 3 (three) years after initial installation.
2) After 3 (three) years, the energy absorbers will be placed on a rotating ISI program such that each one receives a VT-3 examination within a 10-year period. Assuming only the 5 (five) energy absorbers covered by our current application are installed at PBNP - Unit 1, this means that at least one energy absorber would be inspected every two years to identify any generic design or operability problems.
