SUBJECT:
Beaver Valley Power Station Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412 ASME 111 Code Case 1481-2
REFERENCE:
1)
Letter from L. S. Rubenstein (NRC) to J. J. Carey (DLC) dated February 2, 1987.
2)
Letter 2NRC-6-122 from J. J. Carey (DLC) to H. R. Denton (NRC) dated December 12, 1986.
Gentlemen:
Duquesne Light Company (DLC) hereby requests approval to utilize ASME III Code Case 1481-2, " Elevated Temperature Design of Section 111, Division 1, Class 2 and 3 Components" for the thermal hydrogen recombiners installed at Beaver Valley Unit 2.
As noted in your letter of February 2,1987 (reference 1), DLC withdraws its request (reference 2) to utilize Code Case N-253 for the thermal hydrogen recombiner application.
Code Case 1481-2 was implemented by the vendor, Rockwell International, to construct the thermal hydrogen recombiners which have design operating tem-peratures exceeding those of the ASME 111 Code.
This code case was approved by the ASME III council July 11, 1977 and expired July 11, 1980.
The BVPS-2 ther-mal hydrogen recombiners are constructed to ASME 111 Class 2, 1977 Edition through Winter 1978 Addendt and this code case was " active" during the period of procurement and construccion.
The stress allowables employed are show in attachment 1 to this letter.
The appropriate FSAR revisions will be included in a future amendment.
Your expeditious review of this request would be greatly appreciated.
