At the time that the record in the Three Mile Island Unit No. 1 proceeding (Docket No. 50-289 SP) was closed, the Board of Directors of GPU Nuclear Corporation (GPUN) consisted of Mr.

As a result of actual and planned retirements and reassignments, there have been, or will be, some changes in the individuals comprising the GPUN Board although not in the structure of the GPUN Board or its NSCC.

It is the purpose of this letter to bring your records up to date on these changes.

Specifically:

CHANGES TO DATE Mr. F. J. Smith retired as president and chief operating officer of Meted and contemporaneously as a director of GPUN effective January 31, 1986.

He has been replaced in these capacities by Mr. F. D. Hafer.

Page 2 Mr. W. A. Verrochi retired. as president and chief operating officer of JCP&L and as a dir.ector of GPUN, effective October 31, -1986.' He has been replaced as president and chief operating officer of JCP&L by Mr. J. R.. Leva, who was already a director of GPUN.

Leva resigned as president and chief operating officer of Penelec,. effective November 1,1986 and was replaced in this position by Mr. R. L. Wise who was also~ elected a director of GPUN.

The result of the. foregoing is that the current presidents of JCP&L, Meted, and Penelec continue to be directors of GPUN; but by reason of retirements and reassigments, the individuals holding those offices have-changed.

CHANGES TO-BE-IMPLEMENTED GPU announced on December 8, 1986, that the GPU Board of Directors intended to elect Mr.

J. F.

O' Leary as chairman and chief executive officer of GPU and its public utility subsidiaries following the Annual Meeting of GPU Shareholders on~ May 7,1987, to succeed Mr. Kuhns in those capacities upon his retirement.

On January 7, 1987, in preparation for his prospective new duties as chairman and chief executive officer of GPU and its public utility subsidiaries, Mr. '0' Leary, who has been a director of GPU and GPUN, has also become an employee (but not an officer) of GPUSC and will continue in that capacity until he becomes chairman and chief executive officer of GPU and its public utility subsidiaries on May 7, 1987.

Mr. O' Leary will also, continue in'his present capacity as GPUN chairman.

As: a result of these changes, there have been no changes in the overall structure.of the GPUN Board of Directors or its NSCC.

Specifically, the GPUN Board consists of:

Mr. Kuhns reaches age 65 in April 1987.

GPU stated that Mr. John F. O' Leary will succeed Mr.

Kuhns as Chairman,and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. O' Leary, 60, is President of John F. O' Leary Associates in.

Washington, D.C.,

serving clients in the utility and energy industries.

He was previously the first Deputy Secretary of Energy when the U.S. Department of Energy was created in 1977.

He served in that capacity until the fall of 1979.

Mr. O' Leary is currently serving as a member of the GPU Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Board of GPU Nuclear Corporation, a GPU subsidiary responsible for the operation and maintenance of GPU's two operating nuclear plants (Unit 1 at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania and L

Mr. O' Leary joined the GPU Board in October 1979, af ter the March 28, 1979, accident at Three Mile Island.

He became Chairman of the Board of GPU Nuclear Corporation in February 1984.

Prior to the creation of the Department of Energy, Mr.

O' Leary was Administrator of the Federal Energy Administration.

Earlier in his career, he served two years as the Director of Licensing for the Atomic Energy Commission and before that held various positions with the Federal Power Commission and the U.S. Department of Interior.

Mr. O' Leary received his A.B. in Economics from the George Washington University.

Mr. Kuhns joined GPU in 1955 and served in various executive positions before becoming President and Chief Executive Officer in 1967.

He was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1974.

Following his retirement in May, Mr. Kuhns will remain on the GPU Board of Directors.

He also serves as a Director of International Paper Company,

F0' N IMMEDIATELY November ~14, 1986 86-049 NEW PRESIDENT NAMED AT GPU'S PENELEC SUBSIDIARY PARSIPPANY, NJ, November 14 -- Robert L. Wise, 43, has been elected president and chief operating officer of Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of General Public Utilities Corporation (GPU).

The announcement was made by William G. Kuhns, GPU chairman and chief executive officer.

l Wise, currently Penelec's vice president of division operations, succeeds James R. Leva, who earlier was named president of Jersey Central Power 4 Light Company, another GPU subsidiary.

Wise, a registered professional engineer, received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Lafayette College.

He joined Penelee in 1965 as a cadet engineer at the Shawville Generating Station.

I In 1968, he became station supervisor-production at Homer City Station and then was promoted to station

Wise was named Penelec's manager of generating stations in 1975, became assistant vice president of operations in 1979 and vice president of operations a year later.

He served in that position until 1982, when he became vice president of generation engineering and support.

He became vice pre'sident of division operations in 1984.

Wise is a member of the board of directors of the Penn's Woods Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the Western Pennsylvania Safety Council.

He is chairman of the Edison Electric Institute's Environment Executive Advisory t

Committee and is a member of the EEI Task Force on Division Operations.

A successor for Wise has not yet been announced.

Penelse is based in Johnstown, Pa., and provides electric service to about 528,000 customers in west-central, l

northwestern and northern Pennsylvania.

IMMEDIATELY October 28, 1986 86.047 MANAGEMENT CHANGE ANNOUNCED AT GPU SUBSIDIARY PARSIPPANY, NJ, October 28 -- General Public Utilities Corporation (GPU) today announced a senior management change at its Jersey Central Power 4 Light Company (JCP4L) subsidiary.

William G. Kuhns, GPU chairman and chief executive i

officer, said that James R. Leva, 54, has been named president and chief operating officer of Jersey Central, effective November 30.

He succeeds William A. Verrochi, 65, who is retiring after 4 1/2 years as president of JCP4L and 26 years of service with the GPU System.

Leva, currently president and chief operating officer of GPU's Pennsylvania Electric Company subsidiary, began his utility career at Jersey Central nearly 30 years ago.

He started in the utility as a groundhand and progressed through lineman classifications to lineman chief, j

doctor degree from Seton Hall Law School while working at Jersey Central.

Leva served as JCP4L's manager of employee relations and then vice president of personnel before being named vice president of consumer aff airs, the position he held before being named president of Penelee in 1982.

Kuhns said that a successor for Leva at Penelee has not yet been named.

Verrochi joined the GPU System at Penelee in 1961 and served as superintendent of production and then assistant vice president-technical until 1969.

He then served as GPU Service Corporation's vice president-design and construction and vice president of generation until 1977, when he returned to Penelec as executive vice president in June and then became president in September.
