SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING 0F OCTOBER 23, 1986, WITH AP&L CONCERNING INSPECTIONS FOR PEACTOR COOLANT PUMPS DURING REFUELING OUTAGE FOR ANO-1 Introduction At the their request, Arkansas Power and L'ight Company (AP&L) met with the staff on October 23, 1986 at the NRC offices in Bethesda, Maryland, to report

.their findings of the reactor coolant pump (RCP) inspections for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1. As a result of the RCP shaft failure at Crystal River of January 1, 1986, by letter dated April 23, 1986, we requested the licensee to provide information to enable the Commission to determine whether the license for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1, should be modified. The licensee responded by letters dated May 13 and September 15, 1986. The licensee indicated in the September 15, 1986, submittal that at least one pump will be dissassembled

during the refueling outage for inspection and other methods of inspection of the other pumps will be performed during the outage. This meetino reports on

'the licensee's findings of these inspections. The attendees of the meeting are identified in Enclosure 1. The licensee's presentation material is contained in Enclosure 2 which is considered to be proprietary and, there, is withheld from public disclosure per 10 CFR 2.790. A non-proprietary version of this presentation material is enclosed in Enclosure 3 and is being made publicly available.

Discussion Enclosure 2 provides a very good documentation of the subjects discussed at the meeting. The material is presented in order to keep the staff informed.
