Dear Mr. Jordan:

~

This lette: is in response to your application requesting registration of the Model TID smoke detectu. Regarding our telephone discussion on March 1,1999, we are currently addressing ,

the issue of whether the product review for the TID should be considered a new review or an l' amendment. We will contact you upon resolving that issue. In an effort to expedite the review process, we will continue our evaluation of the technical issues. Please address the following issues:

1. Please submit en@ t.g drawings for all components of the ion chamber (with l dimensions, tolerances, materials). Please submit engineering assembly drawings for the ion chamber which illustrates (1) how the ion chamber is assembled, (2) how the source is contained and that the user can not access the source, (3) how the ion chamber is mounted to the circuit board in the TID, and (4) how the circuit board is mounted into the TID. Per your discussion with John Jankovich of the NRC, it is our l understanding that the ion chamber design, the method of mounting the ion chamber to I the TlD circuit board, and the method of mounting the TID circuit board to the TID outer  !

case is identk.il for both configurations. If this in not correct, please notify us immediately, and explain any differences.

2. Please submit drawings for outer cases, including dimensions and materials, and which illustrate bw the TID is mounted to the control panel of the ship.
3. Pleas 5 provide copies of all prototype test procedures, pass / fall criteria, and results. ,

4. Your application indicates that the leak test sampling rate will be 3%. Please note that NRC policy is to require minimum sampling rates as listed in Regulatory Guide 6.9, Appendix C (copy enclosed). Please address this issue and submit new sampling rates.

In addition, please note that NRC policy is to require that the leak test be pedormed on I/

/0 the ion chamber, and be performed after the ion chamber has been mounted on the circuit board. Please confirm that your procedures will Incorporate this, i

5. Your application indicates that "on all TIDs" you will perform a visual inspection of all cornponents before assembly, verify correct labeling, and perform a visual inspection of all units for proper assembly. It is our understanding from this statement that these tests l

w;ll be performed on 100% of units. If this is incorrect, please advise us immediately.

i B. Jordan 6. You indicate that you will perform a visual inspection of the components and a visual inspectior, of the unit assembly to ensure that the device is as described in the application. Please describe these checks. In addition, please confirm that this includes dimensional and material checks to ensure that the components used in the assembly are in accordance with the drawings submitted in the application (i.e. incoming QC of components). As indicated in item #5 above, it is our understanding that you will be performing these inspections on 100% of the component pieces. If the sampling rate for the component dimensional and material check is not 100%, please indicate the sampling rate to be used. Please note that the sampling rates must meet or exceed the minimum sampling rates listed in Reguiatory Guide 6.9, Appendix C.

7. Regarding the dose rate scenarios submitted, upon receipt of the engineering drawings requested above, we will examine the dose rate scenarios that you provided, and will contact you if we have any further questions in that area.

Please submit the requested information within thirty days of the date of this letter. If we have not received complete information within thirty days of the date of this letter, we will consider .

your. application as having been abandoned by you. This is without prejudice to the resubmission of a complete application. '

If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-5868 or Mr. Larry W. Camper at (301) 415-7231.

Sincerely, i
