Subject:

Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station License No. DPR-28 (Docket No. 50-271)

Change of Commitment in Re8Donse to Generic Letter 89-13 In Reference (a), Vermont Yankee described our programs / practices in place at that time to maintain Service Water System performance in response to Generic Letter (GL) 89-13. One practice described was our performance monitoring of the Residual Heat Removal Service Water (RHRSW) pump motor coolers. Our response stated that our performance monitoring of these components was accomplished during monthly pump surveillances.

In Reference (b), Vermont Yankee requested a revision to our facility operating license, revising the test frequency of the RHRSW pumps from monthly to quarterly. This proposed license amendment was approved as Amendment No.128, in March of 1991 (Reference c).

t The change in this commitment was discovered during a recent GL 89-13 program review.

,D The RHRSW pump cooler surveillance test frequency was revised from monthly to quarterly, consistent with the change in pump testing frequency approved and implemented in accordance with Amendment No.128. This quarterly pump cooler test frequency is adequate to detect performance degradation, which has not been a problem at Vermont Yankee to date.

This letter serves as a revision to our previous correspondence and revises our stated frequency for RHRSW pump motor cooler performance testing from monthly to quarterly.
