Dear Sirs:
The cited violation concerns a sh' "nt of radioactive material.
Since the corrective actions impace procedures and operations of personnel who do not report to the me as Reactor Director, specific responses required by the notification of violation are being prepared by and will be transmitted by Ronald Bresell of the University Safety Department.
Mr. Bresell is the RSO for all licenses overseen by the University Radiation Safety Committee and the direct supervisor of those who make radioactive shipments.
I have reviewed and commented on his proposed reply.
We have also agreed that safety department personnel will not object to reactor laboratory personnel using their own checklists to verify compliance with shipping regulations even though the Safety Department personnel are the shippers of record.
I believe the actions planned by the safety department and fuller participation in checking the shipment by reactor laboratory personnel will preclude future occurrences of such errors.
