Shirley Jackson l
Chairwoman Nuclear Regulatory Commission Rockville, Maryland '
- Re:' Millstone Nuclear Power Station
Dear Chairwoman' Jackson:
As you are no doubt aware, public officials, community groups and the public at large are extremely concerned with issues of public health and safety related to the operation of the Millstone Nuclear Power Station in Waterford, Connecticut, less than 15 miles from points on Long Island. Those concerns are raised by the poor performance record of Northeast Utilities, the record fines that have been levied against the company,-
the frequent shutdowns of the plant, and the recent revelation that radioactive water had been dumped into Long Island Sound.
- It has been the unanimous opinion of public officiais and community leaders on Eastern Long Island that Millstone should not be permitted to operate unless it can be
. demonstrated that the health 'and safety'of Long Islanders will be protected. To that end, we have sponsored legislation in theNew York State Legislature directing the Governor of New York to petition the NRC to establish a 50-mile zone for the purposes of evacuation in the case of Long Island. The legislation also provides that the State i
Disaster Preparedness Commission study the feasibility of a safe and workable evacuation plan for eastern Long Island. In addition eastern Long Island towns and villages have passed resolutions calling for the closing of Millstone.
It is our understanding that the NRC will soon be making a decision on the issue -
of restarting Millstone 2. It is also our understanding that public hearings will be scheduled before a decision is rendered. Finally, sources tell us that those hearings will only be held in Connecticut and Washington, p
.We object to any final decision being made on Millstone 2, without the holding of L
- a public hearing on Long Island. We request that such a hearing be held before you make j.
- your decision.
