Dear Senator Mikulski:

I am pleased to respond to your letter of July 28, 1988 which requested a response to a letter from Ms. Patricia Birnie. Ms. Birnie's letter of July 5, 1988 was concerned with a recent event at the LaSalle County Station, Unit 2 in Illinois involving loss of recirculation pump operation and subsequent power oscillations.

Prior to the receipt of your letter the NRC staff had responded directly to a letter from Ms. Birnie on this issue. The text of Ms. Birnie's letter, addressed to the NRC Regional Administrator for Region I in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, is virtually identical to the text of the letter ade.essed to your office. We are enclosing a copy of our response dated August 3,1988 to Ms. Birnie and a copy of her letter to the NRC Regional Administrator.
