JUL 141986 Docket No. 070-01334 License No. SNM-1308 AVC0 Everett Research Laboratories, Inc.

ATTN: Dr. Robert E. Schlier Radiation Safety Officer 2385 Revere Deach Parkway Everett, Massachusetts 02149 Gentlemen:

Subject:

AMENDMENT TO LICENSE N0. SNM-1308 Based on the results of a closecut safety inspection conducted on June 5 and 6, 1984, we understand that you have discontinued the use of licensed material and now possess approximately 77 grams of enriched uranium. Telephone conver-sations between you and members of the Region I staff indicate that while you plan no further use of licensed material, you have been unable to dispose of the licensed material remaining. Since your license does not accurately described the activities being conducted at your facility, within thirty (30) days of the date of this letter, you must request an amendment to License No. SNM-1308.

Ycur request must:

1. Describe the material you still posress and the storage area;
2. Describe the procedures in place to present unauthorized access to or removal of the material;
3. Request that the authorized use be for storage only;
4. Request release for unrestricted use of the portion of the facility which is no longer used for storage of licensed materials; and,
5. Describe your plan for disposing of the material within a reasonable period of time.

While we recognize that it is difficult to dispose of enriched uranium, it is

,our experience that prompt disposal of unneeded material and release of facilities for unrestricted use reduces future difficulties and total costs. Therefore, it is our policy to maintain licenses that reflect current situations. Since we have previously requested that you take this action (see our December 10, 1984 letter, copy enclosed) without a response from you, failure to respond within the time alloted may result in enforcement action.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a)', a copy of this letter will be placed in the NRC Public Dochment Room.
