J. F. Stolz, Director PWR Projects Directorate No. 6 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Stolz:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Post Eddy Current Inspection Report Following the completion of the Eddy Current Inspection of TMI-1 A and B steam generator tubes, Technical Specification 4.19.5a requires a report to be submitted of the number of tubes repaired or removed from service.

During the Outage 6R eddy current inspection, no tubes were repaired in either generator. A total of 39 tubes were removed from service by plugging; 20 tubes in Steam Generator A and 19 tubes in Steam Generator B.

Of these,17 tubes in Steam Generator A and 14 tubes in Steam Generator B had indications exceeding the 40% throughwall repair limits of Technical Specification 4.19.4.a.6.

One tube in Steam Generator A was plugged for conservatism based on engineering judgment, and two tubes with indications less than the repair limit of Technical Specification 4.19.4.a.6 were plugged because portions of the tubes were removed for laboratory analysis.

In Steam Generator B, one tube in the lane / wedge area required stabilization, two tubes were plugged because eddy current probes had become stuck, and two tubes were plugged for conservatism based on engineering judgment. Tube plugging was completed on December 8,1986.

A total of 1247 tubes have been removed from service in Steam Generator A since fabrication.

In Steam Generator B, a total of 359 tubes have been removed from service.

This letter fulfills the requirement of Technical Specification 4.19.Sa.

Sincerely, 8612300338 861223 9 PDR ADOCK 0500 H
