ITEMS OF INTEREST TO THE COMMISSION LOW-LEVEL WASTE MANAGEMENT Low-Level Waste Inspection of Battelle Columbus Labs On July 19, 1988, LeRoy Person will assist Region III in an inspection of This Battelle Columbus Laboratories radwaste processing facilities.

Meeting With South Dakota Secretary of Water and Natural Resources On July 12, 1988, M. Fliegel of HMSS, R. Fonner of OGC and C. Maupin 'of GPA met with John J. Smith, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Water and Mr. Smith discussed South Dakota's proposal to dispose of Natural Resources.
270,000 tons of sewage ash at TVA's Edgemont site, an NRC approximately licensed mill in the process of being decommissioned. Mr. Smith had written NRC to Chairman Zech on June 14, requesting that NRC allow this disposal.
staff told Mr. Smith that a response to his letter was being finalized and that it would state that in order for NRC to consider such a proposal, the request must come from our licensee, TVA.

EPA Mixed Waste Workshop The U.S. EPA is sponsoring a workshop on mixed weste regulation in Denver, CO, The purpose of the workshop is general information July 19 and 20, 1988.
exchange among persons involved with the regulation of hazardous waste and low-level radioactive waste. Attendees will include EPA regional and state RCRA permit writers, DOE, and state and compact low-level waste authorities.
NRC will be represented by staff from HMSS and GPA/SLITP.
