  • .***,o May 11, 1999 CHAIRMAN Professor A.W.K. Kyere Ghana Atomic Energy Commission P.O. Box Lg. 80, Legon Accra, Ghana

Dear Professor Kyere:

I am responding to your letter of March 24,1999, in which you request technical assistance from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Kumasi Radiotherapy Project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. I regret that your list of needed equipment does not include any items the NRC can provide directly to your organization. Instead, I have asked the NRC Office of International Programs staff to coordinate your request with the U.S.

Departments of Energy and State which have previously provided technical assistance to your organization. With regard to your request for training, the NRC will consider training in regulatory oversight of nuclear medicine for one of your staff under our foreign assignea program, provided you can secure appropriate funding from outside sources such as the International Atomic Energy Agency. If you would like additionalinformation regarding this request, please contact Mr. Clarence Breskovic from the Office of International Prograrns at (301) 415-2364.

I would like to thank you once again for your generous hospitality during my short stay in Ghana. I recognize the excellent work you and your staff are_ devoting to your country's radiotherapy program and wish you much success in the future operation of the Kumasi Radiotherapy Project.

I would also like to offer my sincere condolences at the passing of the Otumfuo. It was an honor to have met him during our visit and to have had the privilege of spending time with him in light of his many responsibilities and duties. While his subjects prospered under his stewardship, I am confident that he will be succeeded by a kader of equal stature and ability.

Sincerely, b> L~~'
