Dear Sirs:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No., 50-320 Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Quarterly Decontronination Schedule In response to the NRC letter dated March 7, 1984, the following is the status of Auxiliary and Fuel Handling Building Decontamination for the First Quarter of 1987. This update addresses only those areas where Technical Specification Surveillances are not being performed due to ALARA considerations.

Make-up Filter Cubicle ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspection."

Recent radiological surveys show general area dose rates of 600 to 3000 mrem /hr, with contact readings as high as 5.5 Rem /hr.

Flushing of the Make-up and Purification System (MU&P) was performed intermittently during the past quarter. Anticipated future evolutions of this task will require the use of system filters located in this cubicle.

Radiological conditions can be expected to remain variable until system flushing is completed.

Document Control Desk April 14,1987 4410-87-L-0055 Seal Injection Cubicle ALARA exenption is currently being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3244.01 (4301-M8), " Containment Integrity Verification."

General area dose rates in the cubicle proper range from 1 R/hr - 56 R/hr, with contact readings as high as 140 R/hr.

The floor scabbling program in the cubicle area is progressing. The current work schedule extends the surface decontamination program at least through the Second Quarter of 1987.

Make-up Pump Suction and Discharge Valve Alley ALARA exemption is being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SUR-3775.02 (4331-R3) and 4210-SUR-3775.01 (4331-A1), " Fire Barrier Penetration Fire Seal Inspections."

The general area dose rates for the suction alley range from 25 - 100 mR/hr, with hot spots of up to 1.4 R/hr. For the discharge alley, the general area dose rates range from 150-1500 mR/hr, with hot spots of 5-10 R/hr.

MU&P system flushing operations continued during the past quarter. Radiation levels continue to be influenced by MU&P system flushing and by surface contamination levels.

Initiation of the surface decontamination program for these areas is currently scheduled to commence during the Second Quarter of 1987.

305' Elevation Make-up Valve Alley ALARA exenpi.fon was being taken for Technical Specification Surveillance 4210-SLR-37?5.s' (4331-R3), " Fire Penetration Fire Seal Inspection."

An ALARA revle of this cubicle was performed during the past quarter. Based on that revity, the cubicle is no longer considered to be an ALARA exemption area. Therefore, we will no longer be taking an ALARA exemption for this cubicle, and Technical Specification Surveillance Procedure 4210-SUR-3775.02,

" Fire Penetration Fire Seal Inspection," will be initiated during the Second Quarter of 1987.

Sincerely,

,\\
