i Enclosed is the TMI-1 weekly status report' from the NRC Resident Office at TMI-1 for the subject period. The NRC staff continued to monitor routine plant operations at full power.

TMI-1 status reports are intended to provide NRC management and the public with highlights from an NRC regulatory perspective of TMI-1 activities for the previous week. Subsequent inspection reports will address many of these topics in more detail.

t ENCLOSURE TMI-1 STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD AUGUST 8 - 15, 1986 1.

Plant Status As of 8:00 a.m. on August 15, 1986, TMI-1 was cperating at 100 percent power and at normal reactor coolant temperature (579 F) and pressure (2155 psig).

Facility Operations Summary The plant continued to operate at 100 percent during the reporting period.

No significant operational problems were identified.

During this period, the following significant surveillances were completed:

Channel D reactor protection system calibration / check, and surveillance test on emergency feedwater pumps 2A and 28.

Items of Special Interest Fire Protection Management Meeting On Tuesday, August 12, 1986, Region I conducted a management meeting with the licensee at King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, to discuss the licensee's response, dated May 2, 1986, to an NRC issued notice of violation, dated April 2,1986, in the fire brigade training area (re: NRC Inspection Report No. 50-289/86-01). The meeting was beneficial in enhancing the mutual understanding of both the licensee's overall fire brigade training program and the NRC's regulatory position.

The licensee agreed to provide an additional response to the subject inspection report.

Region I dis-position of the apparent violation is pending the receipt of the addi-tional licensee response letter.

Awards Ceremony

On Wednesday night, August 13, 1986, the licensee conducted an awards ceremony for licensed operators, auxiliary operators, and radiological control / chemistry technicians. The NRC Region I Director, Division of Reactor Projects, awarded NRC certificates to recently licensed reactor operators and senior reactor operators.

The presentation of certificates by NRC is part of an ongoing program to encourage professionalism among NRC-licensed personnel throughout the industry.

Additional Performance Appraisal Inspection The second of the Commission-directed Performance Appraisal Team (PAT) inspections (termed " PAT II") will be conducted between August 25 and September 5, 1986.

The seven-member team is expected to evaluate licensee programs in the following functional areas:

plant operations, including a focus on safety review processes; maintenance; surveillance; design changes and modifications (technical support); and, quality assurance, OFFICIAL RECORD COPY TMI WEEKLY STATUS REPORT - 0004.0.0 11/29/80

including a focus on corrective action systems. At the conclusion of the inspection, an exit interview will be conducted at the site on September 5, 1986.

NRC Staff Activities During the Period During this report period work week, the NRC staff on site consisted of four resident inspectors and three region-based inspectors. Two region-based inspectors performed routine review of the security program and performed followup on findings in the regulatory effectiveness review conducted in June 1986.

This inspection will be documented in NRC Inspection No. 50-289/86-15.

On Thursday, August 14, 1986, an exit interview was conducted with the licensee to summarize the results of a NRC Region I followup review of finding from the first Performance Appraisal Team (PAT I) findings (re:

NRC Inspection Report No. 50-289/86-03).

The results of the Region !

review will be documented in NRC Inspection Report No. 50-269/86-12.
