Zech, Jr.
t Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission i
1717 H Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C.
20555 I am writing with regard to the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Indian Point, N.Y.
Last night reactor #3 had to be shut down due to a release from a steam generator. I am informed that this reactor will remain inoperative until repairs can be made and will then go back on line.
As you are aware, this is not the first incident to interupt the operation of this facility. Indian Point's reactor il has been inoperative, due to safety concerns, since 1972. Last year cracks were discovered in reactor #2 but this reactor remains on line. Now we have experienced a radioactive steam velease in reactor #3.
I am greatly concerned about the safety of the Indian Point Plant and feel that this facility should be shut down until we can absolutely assure the public of its safety. Accordingly, I would appreciate receiving your report on this incident and of the overall safety of Indian Point.
Thank you for your kind attention.
With best wishes, Sin &
i BENJAMIN A. GILMAN Member of Congress I
