INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the i

nonradiological (aquatic) envirorunental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and

{

electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant

~

biological alterations resulting from the THINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in May 1986 (Table 1). Thunder-storms necessitated the following changes in the THINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule:

ichthyoplankton sampling originally scheduled for 6 and 20 May

{

was conducted on 7 and 21 May 1986, respectively. Details are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.

[

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

E Water Ouality Anm1vais Oblactive: To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-

{

vey samples.

Proeress: Water quality samples were collected on 14 May 1986 and forwarded to THI-EC (Table 1).

Select water quality parame-ters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey.

[

[

~

Benthic Macroinvertebrates Ob iec tive : To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of THINS.

Progress: Benthos sampling on 14 May 1986 consiste.d of repli-i cate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthes stations l

(Table 1). May samples were sorted and all specimens were l

identified excepting chironomids.

Ichthvon1mnk ton abiective: To determine species composition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial discribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicintty of TMINS.

Progress : Replicate (2) ichthyoplankton tamples were taken at

{

each of the eight sampling stations on 7.13, 21, and 27 May 1986 (Table 1).

ERina Obiective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence

(

of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of l

fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-(

ity of TMINS.

Proeress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp-ling stations on 7 and 21 May 1986 (Table 1).

[

[

L

[

Electrofishine Obiective: To assess species composition, relative abundance,

.l occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in

(

the vicinity of TMINS.

{

Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 8 and 22 May 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 71 fish of 15 species and 75 fish of 13 species collected on 8 and 22 May.

l respectively (Tables 2 and 3). More fish were collected at Sta-tion 11-B1 than at any other station on both 8 May (21 speci-mens) and 22 May (35 specimens). Station 11-B1 and 10-33 pro-duced the largest number of species on 22 May (7 species each),

[

while species on 8 May were collected at station 13-Al (9 spe-cies). Centrarchids were most abundant with bluegill (14 speci-(

mens) and pumpkinseed (24 specimens) dominating the catch on 8 and 22 May, respectively. Ectoparasites observed on fishes

{

collected on 8 May included: anchor worms (Larnama) on 3 small-mouth bass and one black crappie; and leeches on one redbreast sunfish. Fungus was seen on one largemouth bass; cysts were seen on two bluegill and one smallmouth bass; and one bluegill was seen with lateral curvature of the spine (lordosis). Open wounds or lesions (of undertermined origin) were seen on one smallmouth bass.

Included among fishes collected on 22 May were

(

ripe male bluegill (four specimens) and pumpkinseed (three spe-cimens). Cysts were observed on one bluegill; fungus was seen

(

on one smallmouth bass; and two pumpkinseeds were seen with fin rot.

Wounds related to angling (e.g., hooks in mouth, mouth r

fungus, eye injuries, etc.) were seen on two smallmouth bass collected on 22 May 1986.

Creel Survey Obiective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near THINS.

Proeress: Creel surveys were conducted on 1,10,13, and 18 May 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 173 anglers who report-edly fished 981.41 hours4.74537e-4 days
0.0114 hours
6.779101e-5 weeks
1.56005e-5 months
' caught 1605 fish, and harvested 613 fish (38% of the total catch)(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per ef fort (h/e) were 1.64 and 0.62 fish per hour, respectively.

Smallmouth bass and rock

^

bass were the predominant species caught (670 and 442 specimens, respectively) and harvested (221 and 240 sp:cimens,' respec-tively) by anglers. Most anglers (187), most fish caught (568),

most fish harvested (288), and most hours fished (401.85) were

(

recorded at the York Haven Generating Station.

The highest c/e (2.86) was recorded at the East Dam. Anglers were predominantly

{

residents of York or Dauphin Counties and the majority indicated that they eat at least a portion of their catch.

Creel survey tables for April (labeled Tables 3 through 6) are included at the end of this report. The data were discussed in the April monthly report.
