Dear Congressman Raskin:

Onbehalf oftheU.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Iamresponding toyour July 3, 2020, letter requesting that theNRCextend thepublic commentperiods onthedraft Environmental ImpactStatements (EIS) for two applications for consolidated interim storage facilities until atleast 6months after theCOVID-19 public health emergency concludes. The draft EISs arefor applicationsfrom Holtec International, proposing a facilityinLeaCounty, NewMexico, andInterimStorage Partners, proposinga facility inAndrewsCounty, Texas.

Given thecontinuing COVID-19 public health emergency aswell asrequests from multiple theNRCstaff stakeholders, hasdecided toextend each public comment period. The public will September haveuntil 22,2020, tosubmit comments on the draft EIS for theproposed facilityinNewMexico anduntil November 3,2020tocomment onthe proposed facility inTexas.

Eachextended commentperiod provides thepublic with a total of180days toconsider the draft EISandsubmit anyinput. Notices ofthese extensions werepublished in the Federal Register.
