ATTENTION:
Mr. Hugh L. Thompson, Jr., Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Reguistion
SUBJECT:
Beavar Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412 Diesel Air Dryer Backfit Issue Centlement In evalua t ing the usefulness of installing air dryers at BVPS-2 Duquesne Light Company (DLC) requested the dl,esel generator vendor to respond to several questions.
Even though the vendor believes the BVPS-2 design to l,
be more tolerant of moisture than other designs and the ve ndor does not respotA to whether his experience finds moisture to be a major contributor to reduced reliability, he does point out that the maount of testing imposed on nuclear diesels causes more of a moisture problem than other ty pe s of l'
s e rvice.
Specific maintense ce recomme ndat ions to eliminate the affects of moisture were not proeided, but the versdor did provide a design alternative i
to air dryers.
Having cons id e red this al t e rnat ive. DLC has concluded that 5he installation of two non-safety related air dryers fo r reliability purposes is the most advant age ous solution at this time.
The BVPS-2 FSAR i
will be revised accordingly.
