The Susquehanna Valley Alliance is a safe energy organisation, formed in 1979 as a direct consequence of the accident at Three Mile Island. The Susquehanna Valley Alliance, along with the City of Lancaster successfully prevented GPU Nuclear frm dunping the accident generated radioactive water into the Susquehanna River, our primary drinking water source.
This water has been processed and used for clean-up. It is still radioactive containing among other isotopes, Strontium 90, Cesium 137 and Tritiun which can never be renoved frm water. Other elements present include boron and sodium.
It is estimated that the amount of water to be disposed of will be 2.1 Million gallons.
GPU Nuclear has suggested disposing of the water by one of three options:
- 1. dumping into the Susquehanna River
- 2. evaporation into the air *
- 3. solidification *
- options which require pennission from bodies other than the Nuclear i
Regulatory Comnission and which may not be forthcaning.
The Susquehanna Valley Alliance is emmitted to preventing the dumping of the water into the Susquehanna River.
Fbrthermore,we are deeply cannitted i
to ensuring the proper disposal of this radioactive water.

6ox 1012-Lancasterl)A11604 (717) 39f-2782 It se m s imperative, therefore, that there is independent scientific review of GPU Nuclear's proposal and also of the Nuclear Regulatory Cmmission's Supplement to their Envirormental Impact Statement (1981),made available Dec mber 1986. We also feel that it would be most appropriate to hold Public Hearings on this matter since our envirorment stands to be impacted upon by any method of disposal of the water. Ample discussion would hopefully lead to the best solution for the disposal or storage of this water.
We would like to know of your views on this matter of extree importance to this comunity, and we sincerely hope that your views will express the concern which we have for the health and envirorment of thepeople of this comunity.
'Ihanking you for your attention to this matter.
Yours Sincerely,
