CHAIRMAN 1

Dr. Mario H. Fontana

Dear Dr. Fontana:

As you leave the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS), we wish to express our most sincere appreciation for your contribution to the safety and regulation of the nuclear power program in the United States. Over the past four years, your service as a member of the ACRS has contributed to the improvements in the regulatory process.

Your expertise on several complex technical and policy issues related to severe accident management, application of revised source term to operating plants, capability of the NRC SCDAP/RELAPS Code to predict temperatures and flows in steam generators under severe-accident conditions, and plant life extension has been valuable to the ACRS and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The professional manner in which you carried out your duties and your ability in dealing with, and proposing resolutions to, differing technical views have made your accomplishments and contributions all the more effective.

We wish you good hea!th and good fortune in all your future endeavors.

Sincerely, E$5o s cao J
