SUBJECT: NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORT 50-373/99009(DRS);

50-374/990CEgDRS)

~ Dear Mr. Kingsley:

On April 9,1999, the NRC completed a routine inspection at the LaSalle Nuclear Generating

Station, Units 1 and 2. The enclosed report summarizes the results of this inspection.

The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate to

radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and with the

conditions of your license. Specifically, the inspection focused on the actions recently taken to 3

identify common causes for previously identified programmatic problems with radiation worker i

and radiation protection staff performance at the LaSalle Station, and to correct these I

weaknesses. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of I

procedures and representative records, observations, and interviews with personnel.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified. Your staff completed in-depth assessments

.of the radiation protection (RP) program, identified several common causes for previously

documented problems with human performance during radiological work, and a comprehensive 1

improvement strategy was developed to address these recent findings and those previously

made by the NRC. Your staff was generally effective in implementing and monitoring the initial

- -

n: phases of the improvement strategy and overall positive steps were taken toward achieving the ,

' station's goal to provide superior radiological services.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its

enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room. i
