April 8, 1987 Docket No. 50-245 Licensee: Northeast Nuclear Energy Company Facility: Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 1

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MARCH 4, 1987 MEETING WITH LICENSEE AND NRC REPRESENTATIVES Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) representatives met at the Bethesda, Maryland NRC offices on March 4,

, 1987 to review.the recirculation pipe weld inspection plans for the next Millstone-l' refueling outage, currently scheduled to begin in June _1987.

j Handouts presented during the meeting are to be included in a report currently being prepared for the NRC by NNECO and for this reason are not included here. Copies of this information can, be obtained, however, from the

, undersigned. A list of meeting attendees is attached.

The list of welds to be inspected by the licensee during the June / July refueling was reviewed by the staff for consistency with previous inspections..

A final determination will be made after the report being prepared by the licensee has been submitted and reviewed by the staff. The licensee was ad-vised that leak detection by sump level monitoring, as a substitute for ultra-

! sonic testing of eight (8) inaccessible pipe welds inside drywell penetrations, may not be acceptable to the NRC. Other more sensitive leak detection systems should be considered and discussed in the IGSCC inspection report.
