Mr. Bob Thomas 2

Region V Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1450 Maria Lane, Suite 210 Walnut Creek, California 94596

Dear Mr. Thomas':

Two paint samples, removed from the floor of room 173 at the Exxon Nuclear Facility in Richland, Washington contained plutonium levels of 2

2 and 309 + 17 dpm/100 cm. These levels are in excess 373 + 15 dpm/100 cm 2

of tIIe NRC guideline of 300 dpm/100 cm, maximum, for fixed transuranic surface contamination in facilities being released from licensing restrictions.

The two samples were obtained from an area near the east double door. This area had been used for temporary storage of waste containers during the facility cleanup. Our initial scans had also identified two small locations of contamination in this general area; Exxon cleaned this up at the time of our survey. These findings suggest that several of the grid blocks near the door are probably still contaminated in excess of guidelines. We found that the paint was easily removable from the floor, using a commercial paint stripper 2 of surface compound. We recommend that paint be removed from about 3 m indicated on the attached figure and that Exxon perform followup monitoring of this area to verify the cleanup was effective.

A draft report of the radiological survey of the Exxon Nuclear Facility is nearing completion and should be available to you by early April.

If you need to discuss the values or recommendations presented above, please feel free to call me at FTS 626-3355.

Sincerely, j rwu Elizabeth J. Deming Health Physics Team Leader Radiological Site Assessment Program
