ECCS Application of the FOAM 2 Computer Program for Licensing _ Catawba and McGuire Reloads a===

Dear Mr. Berlinger:
This letter is to confirm B&W's intent to use the FOAM 2 computer 1
1 program as part of its ECCS Evaluation Model for Westinghouse designed plants.
Specifically, B&W plans to use FOAM 2 for the computation of core swell or mixture level' during small break LOCA.
Documentation of the method of use, input model, and options selection will be ' provided in B&W's Evaluation Model Topical Report, which is presently scheduled for submittal to the NRC by 12/31/87.
The NRC has reviewed (Dr. Summer Sun)2,3 and approved FOAM 2 for 4
application to B&W designed plants.
The Safety Evaluation-4 Report (SER), which imposes certain limits on the range of application of the code, is under review at B&W.
B&W expects to request an expansion of the range of application for the B&W plant Evaluation Model.
The application within the Westinghouse design will also require some range expansion.
B&W does not believe that a detailed review of FOAM 2 is required.
- However, a
review as to the applicability of the code to Westinghouse designed plants is in order.
Such a review may 5
i commence now.
B&W has requested that this review be completed by July 1, 1988.
