MAY 0 31H9 Steven V. Reeves Colonel, U.S. Army Project Manager NBC Defense Systems 5232 Fleming Road Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21010-5423

Dear Colonel Reeves:

This refers to your letters dated January 28,1999, and April 1,1999, reporting five occurrences i

of wipe tests greater than 0.005 microcurie on the Army's CAM device, occurring since January 1999. It is our understanding that the Army is currently investigating this issue. This recent increase in the number of leak tests greater than 0.005 microcurie has prompted us to evaluate this issue to determine whether this is indicative of a generic problem with the device and I

whether it is necessary for NRC to take action regarding the use and/or registration of the CAM device. Please provide us with copies of your analysis regarding the cause of failure of these devices, generic implications, and any corrective actions necessary.

)

If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-5868.

Sincerely, W

Michele L. Burgess, Mechanical Engineer Materials Safety Branch Division of Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards Distribution:
