.

  • Environmental Protection Plan 1998 Annual Environmental Operating Report introduction

, Presented below is a summary of environmentally related activities at Lasalle County Station for the year 1998. The summary reveals no significant environmentalimpacts as a result of station operation.

Plant Desian and Operation No changes in station design or operation, tests, or experiments which can be classified as a potentially significant unreviewed environmental issue (per Subsection 3.1) were made.

Veaetative Intearity on Coolina Pond Dike The vegetative integrity on the cooling pond dike was inspected in accordance with Lasalle County Surveillances LTS-1000-5, ' Minor Dike Inspection' and LTS-1000-32, ' Major Dike Inspections'. Inspections during 1998 were completed on April 4, May 5, June 2, July 1, August 5, September 29, and October 7. The results of the inspections determined that the vegetative growth on the Lasalle Cooling Pond Dike was in good condition, however, the lower face of the east dike required reseeding following excavation of the east ditch. [ NOTE: The east ditch was excavated to remove silt buildup. The excavated soil was placed on the lower face of the east dike, which required subsequent reseeding. There were no adverse environmentalimpacts.]

There were no other vegetative concerns noted during the 1998 cooling pond dike inspections.

EPP Noncompliances'and Corrective Actions Taken to Remedy Them During 1998, Lasalle County Station experienced a non-compliance condition.

The event was submitted to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) in accordance with Standard Condition 12 of the station's NPDES Permit No.

ILOO48151. The following contains a description of the noncompliance and corrective actions taken:

EPP Noncomoliance During the month of May,1998 the monthly average sewage treatment effluent

. BODS and BODS loading were 36.6 mg/L and 9.85 lbs./ day respectively. The NPDES permit monthly average limits are:

  • BODS - 30 mg/L e' BODS Loading-9.25lbsJday

'It is believed that hydraulic loading due to rainwater intrusion provoked a solids washout from the sewage plant into the downstream polishing pond. This solids washout resulted in elevated BOD levels.

Corrective Action Taken to Remedy:

a) The station completed video inspection of several sewage collection lines.

Line breaks were identified and repairs were completed June 12,1998.

- b) The polishing pond which received the solids washout was removed from service, cleaned, and placed back in service on May 22,1998.

Non Routine Reports No non-routine reports were submitted.
