Thank you for your April 2,1986 letter forwarding 1985 Senate Joint Resolution 61 on the potential siting of a high-level waste repository in Wisconsin.

As you know, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, the Department of Energy (DOE) is required to site, construct, and operate geologic repositories for high-level waste and spent fuel.

The Act requires DOE to select a site according to procedures that require detailed characterization of several sites.

The Act reaffirmed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) responsibility to review a specific repository site proposal, pursuant to the Atomic Energy Act and the National Environmental Policy Act, in order to protect the public health and safety and the environment.
