Chcago, Illinois 60690 - 0767 April 1, 1987 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Byron Station Unit 2 Fire Protection Emergency Battery Pack Lighting NRC Docket No. 50-455 Reference (a): February 17, 1987 letter from S.C. Hunsader to H.R. Denton

Dear Mr. Denton:

Reference (a) described a design change to emergency battery pack lighting units installed in Byron Unit 2 to illuminate areas involving safe shutdorm activities in the event of a fire.

The modification involved removing the power feed for the lighting units from the AC essential lighting circuits and reconnecting them to non-essential lighting circuits.

Forty-eight emergency battery pack lighting units were affected for Byron Unit 2.

Reference (a) stated the modifications to the lighting units would be completed by April 1, 1987. As of March 30, 1987, the design change has been implemented on 44 of the 48 Unit 2 emergency lighting units. The remaining four units are located inside the Unit 2 containment.

When the April 1, 1987 completion date was established for Unit 2, we expected a forced outage of sufficient duration in cold shutdown to occur prior to April 1, 1987. The initial power ascension of Byron Unit 2 has not created a forced outage of sufficient duration to allow completion of the emergency lighting work in the contain'aent. At present, an outage of sufficient duration is planned for sometime in the month of May, 1987.

This outage will occur after Byron Unit I has returned to operation following its present refueling outage.
