    • .s April 16, 1999 CHAIRMAN Mr. Kaoru Mamiya Director General Nuclear Safety Bureau Science and Technology Agency Tokyo, Japan

Dear Director General Mamiya:

Thank you for your letter of March 3,1999. On June 30, I will complete my appointment as Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and I appreciate your recognition of my upcoming position as the new president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. My service at the NRC has provided me with many opportunities and satisfying accomplishments, and this has included the important collaboration that the NRC has with the Science and Technology Agency (STA).

We are pleased to have hosted Mr. Kazuo Shimomura to work on a temporary assignment at

}

the NRC. His work contributed to projects in our Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and in our Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research. The NRC places great importance on its Foreign Assignee Program. It is an exchange under our bilateral agreement, in which both the NRC staff and the assignee benefit from the exchange of experience and perspectives. In the case of Mr. Shimomura. this certainly has been the case. We are pleased to accommodate your request, and we took forward to receiving additional assignees from the STA in the future.

Sincerely, b

/
