V TENNE 23EE VALLEY AUTHORITY KNOXVILLE. TENNESSEE 3790s MAR 311987 Mr. Kenneth W. Bunting, Director Division of Water Pollution Control Tennessee Department of Health and Environment .

Dear Mr. Bunting:

SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN) -

NPDES PERMIT NO. TN0026450 -

l NONRADIOLOGICAL AQUATIC MONITORING PROGRAM Enclosed are two copies of the report, " Aquatic Environmental Conditions in Chickamauga Reservoir During Operation of Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (SQN) -

Sixth Annual Report (1986)." This report is submitted in accordance with part I, section B.1.c. and part III, section F, of the SQN National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit, and my August 29, 1986 letter to Bruce R. Barrett. The enclosed report summarizes data collected during 1986. SQN did not resume operation in 1986; therefore, studies which required plant operation were not ,

conducted. Studies which were conducted in 1986 and are reported here include the freshwater drum population evaluation and cove rotenone studies.

The intensive freshwater drum investigations conducted in 1986 showed that entrainment of relatively large numbers of freshwater drum eggs and i larvae through SQN during previous years of operation has not adversely affected the population in Chickamauga Reservoir. Therefore, it is reconsnended that no further freshwater drum investigations, including those performed on eggs and larvae, be conducted.

Based on cove rotenone sampling since 1970, it is concluded that operation of -SQN has not had a signiffcant adverse impact on (ish standing stocks in Chickamauga Reservoir. Annual fish sampling using rotenone in coves should continue as presently being conducted with one exception. The uppermost cove in Chickamauga (Sewee Creek) should be deleted since it is questionable that data from this location are representative of reservoir fish populations.
