PROPOSED INDUSTRY RESPONSES TO GENERIC LETTER 98-01, SUPPLEMENT 1,"vEAR 2000 READINESS OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS AT NUCLEAR POWER PLMTS" On March 9,1999, NRC staff met with a representative of the Nuclear Energy institute (NEI) to discuss industry plans for responding to Supplement 1 of Generic Letter (GL) 98-01, " Year 2000 [Y2K] Readiness of Computer Systems at Nuclear Power Plants,"
dated January 14,1999. A list of the meeting participants is included as Enclosure 1.
This supplement was issued in response to an NEl recommendation as stated in the NEl letter to the NRC dated November 9,1998. The supplement provides a voluntary alternative response to the original generic letter. Specifically, licensees responding shall still include the information on the readiness of those systems within the scope of the facility license and NRC regulations as initially requested, but may supplement the submittal with information on overall plant Y2K readiness. This additional information has been requested to determine the Y2K impact on the ability of a plant to support the grid and the nation's electric power infrastructure.
The proposed response provided a sample cover letter and Y2K readiness disclosure statement. In addition, guidance was included on the basis for declaring a facility "Y2K ready," for determining when remediation is complete, and for allowing alternatives if remediation is not complete. The guidance also stated that facility readiness should focus on long-term operation, and not just key dates.
