Dear Sir:

On 4/16/96, GE received NRC approval of Revision 2 of the Final Status Survey and Release Plan for the Northwest CaF Storage Area. Our original schedule was to complete remedial activities 2

and sampling in support of final decommissioning and release of this area within two years. Due to unusually heavy rainfall, initiation of our sampling plans was delayed until late last year to allow access to an excavated area that remains covered by standing water. On 11/24/98, GE received NRC approval for additional time to allow completion of the final stages of decommissioning sampling and reporting activities.

i Since last fall, significant progress has been made. Exposure rate and surface gamma scan j

surveys have been completed at the required locations and are acceptable. A total of 547 surface and subsurface samples have been collected and analyzed at the spocified locations. Of these, two sample results remain above the remedial action level of 90 pCi/gm. We are currently evaluating our options to reconcile these elevated sample results. However, we would prefer to delay submitting the final status survey report until the elevated sample result locations have been completely evaluated and resolved.

We are therefore requesting an additional six month extension for submittal of the Final Status Survey Report to the NRC on or before October 16,1999.

If you have any questions regarding this request, please contact me at (910) 675-5656.

Sincerely, GE NU LEAD ERGY
