! Thank you for your inquiry on the NRC and nuclear power. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is responsible for the public's health and safety with regard to the use of nuclear material, including nuclear power, in the United States.
The nuclear industry is one of the most carefully watched industries in the country, and the i owners of nuclear power plants must continuously prove to the NRC that their plants are operating safely and within our regulatory restrictions. Also, the NRC has at least one resident inspector who lives near the plant and works on site to ensure the owners are abiding by the requirements.
Nuce .,r power bums cleanly, produces no acid rain and does not contribute to global warming.
One pellet of nuclear fuel (uranium) can produce more energy than a ton of coal. There is no more radiation released from a safely operated plant than is ordinarily present on any street in j
the United States. However, the problem of nuclear waste disposalis critical, and this country I
! must eventually build a repository which can be licensed to dispose of spent, or used, nuclear / l
! fuel. I J

There are currently 104 operating plants in the United States. To prepare for unlikely accidents at reactors, the owners of nuclear power plants are required to submit an emergency plan to t NRC. This plan must detail the procedures tha'.will be followed should an emergency occur. The owners of the plant must also coordinate their actions with local citizens and 7 9 residents living near the plant, as well as the State and federal government, in planning 6 9 l evacuation routes and sheltering of the community. carried out.
I In addition, the owners of the plar2 must have procedures in place so that residents may be l notified quickly of an accident, they must have the proper equipment available to treat medical ;
and radiological injurbs, and they must ensure their staff has been adequately trained to carry '
out these duties.
Nuclear power plants today must conform to the most rigorous requirements, and we believe that with the proper oversight, nuclear power can continue to provide us with a clean, reliable and efficient source of energy for many years to come.
